Mbombela – THE 2018 KISHUGU LOWVELD AIR SHOW, WITH ITS SMASHING LINE-UP OF AEROBATIC DISPLAYS, WAS AGAIN A MAJOR SUCCESS – FUN-FILLED, ACTION-PACKED AND SKY-ROCKING! THIS LOCAL EVENT, WHICH TOOK PLACE ON SATURDAY, 12 MAY AT THE NELSPRUIT AIRFIELD, WAS SUPPORTED BY ABSA BANK, AND IN PARTNERSHIP WITH JAGUAR NELSPRUIT AND KMI AIRPORT. TO TOP-OFF THIS DAY, TOPS AT SPAR HOSTED A ROCK THE RUNWAY AFTERPARTY THAT KEPT AVIATION ENTHUSIASTS ROCKING AROUND THE CLOCK, RAVING ABOUT THEIR FAVOURITE AIRCRAFT AND ACTS.

The firework display, together with the local rock and blues band, Gibraltar, was a hit and spectators jammed along as ACDC’s “Thunder” rocked into the night. More than 6,000 spectators entered the gate and were delighted by this quality family event that catered for young and old. There was a large variety of food stalls, exhibitors, beer tents, the biggest ever kids play area and breath-taking aerial displays. The day undoubtably added an exciting beat to the local events calendar: bringing both entertainment and exposure to the thrilling world of aviation – which is the Lowveld Air Show committee’s main goal.

Everything, from the Harley Davidson formation, SANDF Skydivers drop, the Gazelle Helicopter versus the Jaguar F-Type and Range Rover Relay, to the Pumas Flying Lions, the one and only Black Hawk and Working on Fire’s AT 802 bombers and Huey helicopters, contributed to the event being one big head-banging performance. The Jet Display and 1941 Boeing Stearman also kept spectators at the edge of their seats.

And, that is exactly what the 2018 Lowveld Air Show promised. With a theme like, Rock n Roll, we wanted to rock the skies, the runway and the entire day.

“A whole lot of impressive heavy metal took to the sky, some great pilots got to show-off their jaw-dropping skills, local vendors gained business, whole families were thoroughly entertained – and none of this would have been possible without our partners’ sponsorships and participants,” Johan Heine, chairman of the Lowveld Air Show Committee stated. “Special thanks to all of your involvement and for contributing to making this day a huge success.” Johan Heine also thanked the spectators who, despite the action-packed weekend, still supported the air show.

The Youth Day, which was hosted the Friday, was also a huge success. Just over 2,000 scholars and 200 Cadets – top learners in Mathematics and Science from local schools – attended this educational and fun day, which was thoroughly enjoyed by all. “We are pleased that so many scholars could attend the day, despite the bus strikes that we are currently facing,” Johan said.

Legendary pilot for the Flying Lions, Scully Levine, stated: “We were very impressed by the whole day. Everything, from the organisation, the line-up to the food, was spectacular. Congratulations to the Lowveld Air Show committee.” According to another keen air show enthusiast, who attends all the air shows in the country, Johan Du Plessis (Senior) stated that the past air show was the best he’s ever experienced to date.

“We wish to see everyone who attend this year, as well as other aviation lovers who couldn’t make it this time round, next year, for an even bigger and better Lowveld Air Show,” Johan concluded.
