MOPANI MTB Final results
White River – The Mopani MTB finals provided nail-biting entertainment as cyclists battled it out for placements in the series final on Saturday. The event took place at Casterbridge Hollow Hotel in White River and cyclists had the opportunity to traverse the MTO Trails in White River, cycling along single tracks and forest paths in a race to the finish line.
Race organiser Tanya Knight from Sunshine Events said that the 2018 series was the most successful to date. “The diversity of terrain between the different venues is one of the biggest draw cards for this event. Furthermore the race lends itself to a fun environment for amateur cyclists and a challenging platform for professional, competitive racers. As such we have had wonderful support from the cycling community and businesses that have come on board as sponsors for the event.”
Cyclists had to take part in at least three of the five events in the Mopani MTB series during 2018 in order to take to the podium. Despite Saturday’s sweltering heat, cyclists achieved admirable results.
In the15km girls’ race the overall winners were Megan Botha in first place, Theane Pelser second and Skye Pulvenis third. In the boys’ 15km race Lohan Pelser came first, Jowan Pelser second and Jared Faul third.
For the 25km girls’ race it was Suzanne Mare in first, Jessica Svacha second and Megan Wiehman third. Tiaan van Pletzen took first place for the boys’ 25km race, Arno Matthee second and Jooste Coetzee third.
In the 48km ladies’ race Kirsten Gillespie took top honours. She also took the title of Bidvest Van & Truck Rental Queen of the Mountain for the series. Heila Meintjies came second and Johlene Faul and Neline Hoffman Kellerman tied in third place. For the men it was Franco Pelser that took first place and the Bidvest Van & Truck Rental King of the Mountain title, with Christo Carelsen second and Bester Burger third.
The series continues next year with a new sponsor on board. The Demacon Max Wax series kicks off the four part event on 2 February at Kavinga Guest House in Nelspruit. Next year will also feature Dullstroom as one of the locations for the race.
