Residents raise up a stink over delayed waste collection
The Steve Tshwete Local Municipality Spokesperson, Prudence Magutle, said the municipality is looking into engaging with workers over their grievances.
This comes after waste collection workers downed tools last Tuesday.
The workers are protesting against the outsourcing of services, saying that their jobs will soon be made redundant if the municipality continues to outsource services. The workers handed over a memorandum of their demands last Wednesday to the mayor.
Since the essential workers downed tools, residents raised concerns about their uncollected waste and have been demanding answers from the municipality.
Messages calling for mass protests on Tuesday against “corruption” have been circulating on social media sites.
It is not clear when the demonstration will end.
•Solid waste collectors have moved their demonstration to the municipal civic centre. The area is disturbed by protest action and residents are urged to approach the area with caution.
