Local Athletes Vuni and Thobile shine Mpumalanga Flag High
South African 1 500m U/17 Champion and 800m silver medalist – Vuni Madonsela of eMalahleni, and his counterpart u/17 bronze medalist in the 3 000m category – Thobile Amon of Middelburg, shone the Mpumalanga flag high at the recent South African Youth and Junior Championships held at Mangaung Athletics Stadium, Bloemfontein, from 9 to 11 April 2015.
The nation’s Under-17 athletes displayed spectacular form in the build-up to the World Youth Championships, producing solid all-round performances.
- Vuni Madonsela is a local Emalahleni runner from Hlalanikahle and displayed an outstanding performance in winning gold in the 1 500m race in a time of 03:56:67. He also claimed second position in the 800m race with a time of 01:51:31.
Prior to the South African Championships, Vuni broke the record of the Athletic Gauteng North u/17 800m and 1500m races with times of 01:51.06 and 03:57 respectively at the AGN Championships held at TUKS over 20 and 21 March 2015.
- Thobile Amon from Mhluzi in Middelburg, raced home to claim bronze in the 3 000m Girls u/17 category in a time of 10:27:29. Prior to the SA champs she finished in second place at the AGN championships.
Both Vuni Madonsela and Thobile Amon were awarded HPC TUKS bursary early this year to further their studies while focusing on their gifted talent under mentorship of international coach Michael Sponge Seme.
It did not take a miracle for them to be where they are today, it only took hard work, focus, discipline and determination.
