‘Celebrity Cook’ Tannie Poppie visits Middelburg Mall
KykNET’s cooking reality TV show ‘Kokkedoor’ took the nation by storm when it was aired early in 2013 – and it made a superstar out of Tannie Poppie Coetzer as she became well known in Afrikaans households. But what not many people know is that Tannie Poppie has been a local Witbank resident for most of her life and these days spends her time near Kriel.
Although she lost in the closing stages of the competition and finished fourth, her natural flair with food – of which she ‘inherited from her grandmother’ – together with a distinct taste that is clearly everybody’s favourite – resulted in Tannie Poppie winning nevertheless.
She was offered a book contract anyway – and it’s so successful thus far that she hints a ‘second book’ is now on the cards.
Tannie Poppie Coetzer is everyone’s idea of the perfect granny figure. She’s often up at three in the morning, cooking and baking and lists her favourite food as oxtail, samp, pumpkin fritters and ‘souskluitjies’.
She visited Bargain Books Middelburg Mall to promote her cookbook ‘Tannie Poppie Kook’ – and by midday had already praised the positive response.
When asked which of the recipes in her book was the best, she replied that the most popular was the ‘Melktert’, and a close second was her recipe for ‘Pampoenpoffertjies’.
And her secret ingredient ?
“My secret ingredient is love. Cook with love and the food will be delicious. Oh, and also cinnamon!” she said with a gentle smile on her face.
The recipe book ‘Tannie Poppie Kook’ is available at Bargain Books Highveld Mall.
