Wanderers Stadium, Illovo, Johannesburg
The legendary BIDVest Wanderers Stadium is located just south of Sandton in Illovo, Johannesburg. Known by all South Africans as the home of cricket, a place where Test, One Day and first class cricket matches are played. It is also the home ground for the Highveld Lions, formerly known as Gauteng (Transvaal) Lions.
The stadium was built in 1956 to replace the Old Wanderers stadium and in 1991 on re-entering international cricket, Wanderers got a complete revamp that allowed the large 34000 capacity stadium to stage the likes of the Cricket World Cup 2003 final, and the matches of the first T20 Worldcup in 2007.The new design and intimidating atmospere led to the name of “Bullring”. In 1996, to enable day-night limited overs cricket, large floodlights were installed to replace the previous smaller ones.
It was previously known as Liberty Life Wanderers, but as from the 2008/09 season BIDVest took up the sponsoring of the ground, hence its present day name of BIDVest Wanderers Stadium.
It is nicknamed ‘The Bullring’ due to its design and intimidating atmosphere
The pitch is considered pretty bouncy and precarious for batting, as acknowledged in 2009 ICC Champions Trophy, and teams like Pakistan and Sri Lanka have always struggled here.
