Former champion excited to introduce academy riders to the Fedhealth Magalies Monster MTB Classic
North West Province – Phillimon Sebona, one of the country’s top marathon mountain bikers and a former Fedhealth Magalies Monster MTB Classic Champion, will introduce two young academy riders to the excitement of the Magalies Monster that will take place at the ATKV Buffelspoort on Saturday 28 August 2021.
The 2017 Fedhealth Magalies Monster MTB Classic Champion, Sebona is now the manager and ambassador for the C2R team. C2R is an initiative supported by Curro that aims to promote cycling as a medium for family cohesion, relaxation, fun, and possible career choice for those truly interested in becoming professional athletes.
“The Fedhealth Magalies Monster MTB Classic is a one-day event that has all the best climbs to test your fitness, and downhills to test your skill,” says Sebona. “Although the Monster Climb is the toughest part of this event, the open roads are also unforgiving as you need to pedal more to get closer to the finish line. The route is tops. My goal will be to give my best and try to win. My advice to first time entrants is to pace yourself. It’s a long way to the finish.”
“I am very excited to introduce two academy riders, Albert Mothogoane and Botshelo Makolane to the Fedhealth Magalies Monster MTB Classic this year,” continues Sebona. “Belonging to the Lion’s Club Academy in Mamelodi, both riders will toe the line in the Half Marathon (+-33km race). My role is to mentor the riders while assisting the academy with a training plan. I selected Albert and Botshelo because their mountain biking skill is great and because they have proven to be dedicated and focused on our plan. They also never give up. I am excited to see how they do at the event and can’t wait to receive their feedback afterwards.”
“I entered the Magalies Monster because I enjoy mountain biking and I want to become stronger at it,” says Mothogoane. “The sport keeps me healthy and fit. It also keeps me off the streets. I want to be a winner and upgrade my career in the cycling industry.”
“Mountain biking keeps me fit, healthy and away from drugs,” says Makolane. “I want to become a pro rider and have a career in the cycling industry.”
Sebona’s teammate, Jan Montshioa, will also make his Fedhealth Magalies Monster MTB Classic debut on the day. “I have never raced the Magalies Monster,” admits Montshioa. “I am really looking forward to it and will definitely get the best advice about the route from Phillimon. I’ve heard about the Monster Climb and can’t wait. I’ve been racing with Philemon since 2018 and am excited to get the best results at this event.”
