Linda Wilson of Fouriesburg’s pottery is unique – and very popular.
Fouriesburg is near Clarens and full of interesting arts and crafts enterprises, including The Crazy Potter, owned by Linda Wilson.
A graduate of the Fine Arts Department at Wits, Linda moved to Fouriesburg some years ago and, having a passion for ceramics, started producing a range of really unique crockery, particularly tea sets and mugs. Because they had an African feel as well as unique designs, they were immediately snapped up by upmarket tourist destinations, such as private game reserves.
The business started growing and Linda was soon able to employ women from the local township to handle the production side of things while she designed additional a happy hug.The latest development is painting The Lovers in the flags of different countries, and the South African and Namibian versions are selling like hot cakes.
I always like good news stories from the country districts and Linda’s is one of them. She’s experiencing artistic satisfaction, making a name for herself and creating job opportunities.
All her functional ware is produced by slip-casting, a method that ensures each piece is identical in shape. They are then individually hand decorated, while every item is dishwasher; microwave and oven safe.
lines. A natural choice was to create a range of ceramic animals that are both highly original and appealing.
In her spare time Linda practises karate. Amazingly, a karate teacher arrived in town whose wife was also a ceramicist, specialising in jewellery. Dot Salmon and Linda formed a close relationship and Linda’s business, Lindoro Ceramics, now produces traditional African jewellery designs as well.
Always on the lookout for new ideas, Linda recently created The Lovers – a dinky set of salt and pepper shakers that fit together in a hug.
