6 Of the best Nine-Hole Golf Courses
Article from the December 2013 issue of Compleat Golfer Magazine.
1. Bosch Hoek
Regularly mentioned as one of the top nine-holers in SA, this little beauty in KZN’s Balgowan area rates as one of the country’s most beautiful layouts. Towering trees, mountain backdrops and a well-maintained course contribute to a superb day out in the Midlands.
This resort course on the west coast of the country (an hour-and-a-half’s drive north of Cape Town) may be short, but it presents a real test of golf to the visitor. Narrow, mounded fairways and well-positioned bunkers mean that you are unlikely to overpower it, especially when the coastal wind starts blowing.
3. Gowrie Farm
Guy Smith’s Gowrie Farm is a real treat – a links course in the heart of Nottingham Road in the KZN Midlands. It’s old-school golf here – a walking-only course with classic holes and a feeling of the game as it is meant to be played. The layout cleverly changes on the two nines, so you don’t ever feel like you are playing the same hole twice.
4. Metropolitan
Arguably the best-located course in SA, in the centre of Cape Town, ‘The Met’ received a facelift to accommodate the 2010 World Cup stadium and is back to its best conditioning. The southeaster that blows ensures the layout is no pushover, and it remains one of the city’s most popular tracks.
5. Graaff-Reinet
Located in the heart of the Karoo, the Graaff-Reinet layout is a little golfing oasis, with green fairways and surprisingly good greens. It’s quite a short course, but those who stray off the fairway will discover just how dry and hard the Karoo landscape is.
6. Mooinooi
Mooinooi, situated just outside Brits in the North West province, has some of the finest greens in the country and is one of the most popular courses among the Sunshine Tour pros when the Platinum Classic is held there each year. Despite being relatively flat, the course still requires accuracy on your approach shots in order to navigate the large, undulating greens in as few shots as possible.
