2013 Tour Schedules
Article from the February 2013 issue of Compleat Golfer Magazine.
With even more South Africans making their names on the bigger tours worldwide, expect many victories in 2013. Here’s where, when and what they will be up to throughout the year.
US Tour
This year is guaranteed to be a bumper year on the US Tour as many of the high-profile names from Europe have taken up membership in the States. Despite no wins for South Africans all year on the tour in 2012 (it would be a stretch to consider Ernie’s Open Championship win a USTour victory), our national flag was still carried high by Louis Oosthuizen, who certainly had enough close calls throughout 2012, finishing second a few times, including his playoff loss in the US Masters. Ernie Els and Rory Sabbatini had a couple of near misses too. The end of last year showed hope, with Charl Schwartzel’s runaway victory in Thailand and in the Alfred Dunhill Championship, and Oosthuizen and Tim Clark’s near wins in Sun City and Durban respectively. One of these players is sure to break the drought in 2013 in the US. Let’s also hope to see another Major title bagged for the fourth year running.
US Tour SA Players

European Senior Tour
David Frost’s victory in the season-ending Tour Championship in Mauritius was the only win for South Africa on the 2012 European Senior Tour. There were still consistent performances from the SA contingent, with Chris Williams finishing the season sixth on the Order of Merit. Frost now plays most of his golf on the Champions Tour, but expect to see him return to Europe every now and again.

Champion Tour
Two wins late in the season made David Frost our best performer on the Champions Tour in the States. Despite these wins, Frost was too far off the leaders in the race for the Charles Schwab Cup, but did finish a respectable 12th in the standings. Mark McNulty was the next best finisher from Southern Africa, coming in at 32nd in the points race. Nick Price will be captain of The Presidents Cup International team, so expect to see even less of him on the course this year. There are five Major titles up for grabs on the ChampionsTour, one of which, The Traditions, is only open to ChampionsTour players. Hopefully a South African name will appear on one of these trophies this year. Perhaps Gary Player will break his age enough times in a row to add a 10th senior Major to his already incredible collection.
Champions Tour SA PLayers
Fulton Allem, David Frost, Mark McNulty, Nick Price, Gary Player, Denis Watson.
European Tour Schedule
The European Tour is once again bound to be a happy hunting ground for South Africans, especially with the increased tally of co-sanctioned events on home soil. With most of the big names playing mainly in the States, it has opened up doors for the lesser-known players and last year Branden Grace took full advantage of this, winning four times on the European Tour. Expect to see more great golf from him this year. George Coetzee continues to knock on the winners’ door and should be pencilled in for a win this year. It is only a matter of time before he breaks through. With it being a Presidents Cup year and with Zimbabwean Nick Price captaining the International team, you can be sure that all of the South Africans plying their trade in Europe will be champing at the bit for a win and a chance to be part of the exclusive event.
Amazingly enough, Ernie Els wasn’t a member of the European Tour in 2012, but you can be sure he will play more events in the UK as he looks to defend his Open Championship title. Hopefully Retief Goosen will also make a successful comeback to golf in Europe as the former European Tour Order of Merit winner returns from yet another back injury.

Ladies European Tour
It was another quiet year for South African ladies in Europe. However, despite no wins, Lee-Anne Pace kept up her solid form by finishing seventh on the Order of Merit.
She also came up just shy in her attempt to win the SA Women’s Open on its return to the official European schedule. The event will take place once more this year and you can be sure that the big South African contingent in the field will try their hardest to keep the title on home soil this time around. Ashleigh Simon was the last South African to win on the Ladies European Tour back in 2011 in the Portugal Masters, and she will look to add another title in 2013 despite having to split her time between the LET and the LPGA Tour. Bonita Bredenhann is the latest SA player to join the LET, after gaining her card through Q-School.

LPGA Tour
With the extremely limited coverage of the LPGA Tour on television, there won’t be much chance of seeing Ashleigh Simon in action in the States as she takes up conditional status on the tour. We will, however, keep you up to date with the results in the US, and hopefully Simon will make
us proud and win a few tournaments there. She will face some tough competition, with the Asian contingent seemingly getting stronger and stronger. Yani Tseng still holds the top spot in the world ranking, while all four of the 2012 Majors were won by Asians. Will Simon be the answer to this onslaught or will the Asians reign supeme again?
