“South Africa’s Tourism Boom: Rapid Recovery and Economic Boost”
The President addressed the nation in his weekly newsletter, discussing the recent tourism statistics released by Statistics South Africa and Tourism Minister Patricia de Lille. The data revealed that South Africa experienced a 150% increase in visitors last year, with 5.7 million people gracing its shores. In the first quarter of this year alone, over 2 million visitors arrived in the country.
Despite the ongoing challenges posed by global political and economic uncertainty, as well as domestic issues like electricity supply, South Africa remains an attractive destination for tourists. President Ramaphosa emphasized the significant and rapid recovery taking place in the tourism sector. Although arrivals haven’t reached pre-pandemic levels, the latest figures indicate a positive trend.
The President highlighted the positive impact of tourism on the economy, stating that as more tourists visit the country, the economy also benefits. In the first quarter of 2023, tourists spent over R25 billion, contributing to foreign exchange reserves, job creation, and further investment in tourism infrastructure.
President Ramaphosa praised the Africa Travel Indaba, which provided an opportunity for small players in the tourism sector to showcase their products and services. Over 120 exhibitors were local tourism enterprises supported by the government, aiming to foster partnerships and promote transformation within the industry.
The President also acknowledged the importance of continental visitors, with approximately 4 million out of the total 2022 visitors coming from Africa. To capitalize on this trend, South Africa plans to expand its e-Visa system. Travelers from the region and the continent are increasingly viewing South Africa as a premier tourism destination and are eager to experience its natural wonders and support local businesses. Immigration reform and the expansion of the e-Visa system will enhance the country’s competitiveness in the global tourism market.
Furthermore, President Ramaphosa mentioned that the resumption of direct flights by South African Airways to various countries acts as a catalyst for attracting tourists back to South Africa. For instance, Air China has resumed direct flights, and United Airlines now offers direct routes to New York and Washington DC.
The President concluded by expressing his optimism and determination to make tourism one of the major drivers of South Africa’s economic recovery. The positive tourism figures provide encouragement and reinforce the country’s commitment to supporting the sector’s growth, attracting investment, and creating job opportunities.
