Silver River
Bet you don’t know the Silver River. Not many people do, primarily because it’s a well-hidden tributary of the Kaaimans River.
The sign board is pockmarked with bullet holes, the magnificent old bridge spanning it is covered in graffiti. Venture beyond the old stone bridge (built in 1903 and proclaimed a National Monument), however, and you’ll find fantastic rock pools and picnic spots. The most charming thing is that there’s virtually no traffic along the picturesque though largely abandoned road that used to link George to Knysna. Known as the Seven Passes road, you can access it from George, Wilderness Heights Hoekwil, Karatara or Rheenendal.
