Orcas have arrived in Knysna!
Orcas once again graced our Knysna coastline on the 31st of October 2021 and were beautifully captured by Ocean Odessy.
The school of Orcas has become an annual feature on our coastline over the past couple of years. They can be spotted from Angola to Mozambique and it’s always exciting when they visit our waters.
The “killer whale” is actually a dolphin and in fact, is the largest member of the dolphin family.
The name “killer whale was derived from the ancient sailors’ observations of groups of Orcas hunting and preying on larger whale species. The sailors called Orcas, ‘asesina ballenas’, or ‘whale killer’ – a term that was eventually flipped around to the easier version of ‘killer whale’.
