Youths add Mojo to Film Fest
A Knysna Municipality initiative as part of the Knysna Film Festival (KFF) came in the form of a four-day Introduction to Film and TV workshop from 23 to 27 September, for a group of local youths presented by iKasi Media.
The orientation programme was aimed at selecting a group of individuals to work for the festival and forms part of the recruitment and selection for a three-month Sector Education and Training Authority (Seta) accredited course that will run later this year in George.
iKasi Media, a start-up training provider for film, TV and digital media programmes to marginalised young people in rural areas, in the Western Cape, West Coast, and Eastern Cape. “The goal is to unearth new voices,” said SA actress and iKasi Media team member Lika Berning.
Through these workshops, iKasi Media’s objectives are to encourage, support and motivate rural youth to find employment or become entrepreneurs in mobile content development, by assisting in starting small businesses for their communities in the digital media space. At this latest workshop, held in accordance with Knysna Film Festival and Knysna Municipality (who also funded the workshop), the group of youths from Knysna was shown how to make a short video using their smartphones.
These youths will participate in mobile journalism (mojo) workshops to make one-minute videos during the festival. iKasi Media and the KFF have further plans to meet the need for semi-skilled crew members for local and international productions on the Garden Route and to place job-ready youth in workplaces under expert mentorship to grow media-related businesses in the Western Cape.
The Knysna recruits will also be working at the Knysna Film Festival, which takes place from 29 October to 2 November, at more than 11 locations all over Knysna.
