Western Cape Weather: Update on the Severe Weather Impact
George Continues Mop-Up Operations After Severe Flooding: Update on Western Cape Weather Impact
Mop-up operations are ongoing in George following intense floods caused by torrential downpours overnight. While the rain has eased, George Disaster Management Services urge caution on roads, still wet and slippery from recent rains.
Road closures remain in effect, notably Die Vleie in Wilderness, due to high water levels. Motorists are advised to drive slowly and carefully due to the slippery conditions.
The flooding has affected various areas, with 24 homes flooded across George, including a partial structure collapse in Herold. Evacuated residents are temporarily housed at Blanco Community Hall and Lyonville Community Hall. Schools like Up with Downs School and VGK Primary School report flood impacts, leading to temporary closures.
Disaster Management Services are assessing damages in Wilderness and at the Wilderness Water Treatment Works. Electrotechnical Services are evaluating infrastructure damages in Anchorage Lane and nearby streets.
Service delivery is disrupted, with the Gwaing Landfill Site closed and green bag collections suspended. However, black refuse and recycling bag collections have resumed.
Emergency Services remain on alert, ready to respond to any emergencies. Residents are advised to only travel if necessary, drive slowly, and avoid crossing fast-moving water bodies.
Premier Alan Winde and the Western Cape Government are closely monitoring the weather’s impact, especially in the Garden Route district where heavy rainfall persists. Dam levels are rising in the region, requiring constant monitoring.
