Two busted for drugs
Police members of the Rural Flying Squad deployed to eradicate illicit activities along highways arrested two suspects after drugs were found in their vehicles during operations last weekend.
The first arrest occurred at about 15:20 on Saturday 27 November. Police officers responded to information from the public and stopped a maroon Volkswagen Polo on the N12 at the entrance to Oudtshoorn.
“A search of the vehicle led to the discovery of travelling bags stashed with dagga. The police confiscated 17,6kg of dagga and arrested the 27-year-old driver on a charge of dealing in drugs,” said Southern Cape police spokesperson Sergeant Chris Spies.
Later the same day, at about 16:00, the deployed team together with Western Cape Provincial Traffic officials conducted a vehicle checkpoint on the N2 highway at Wilderness. The officers stopped a Honda Jazz that was travelling from Knysna.
“Upon searching the vehicle, the officers found five packets of magic mushrooms and a small quantity of crushed Ecstasy hidden in the back. They confiscated the drugs and arrested the 33-year-old suspect on a charge of possession of drugs,” Spies said.
Both suspects remain in custody and are expected to appear in the respective courts during the week.
According to Spies, Acting Eden Cluster Commander Brigadier Phumzile Cetyana commended the officers for their vigilance and concerted efforts to eradicate drug trafficking along the highways of the region.
