Stand Against Offshore Oil and Gas Exploitation
Help Protect Our Oceans Our precious oceans, the lifeblood of countless communities is under dire threat. The Department of Mineral Resources and Energy’s recent approval of TotalEnergies’ Deep Western Orange Basin (DWOB) Oil and Gas drilling application on the West Coast is a grim reminder of the ongoing assault by the oil and gas industry on our marine environment.
The Green Connection, alongside impacted small-scale fishers, vehemently opposes this decision and vows to fight for our ocean’s survival.
The implications are severe: the reckless pursuit of fossil fuels not only exacerbates the climate crisis but also jeopardizes our marine ecosystems, threatening the livelihoods of fisherfolk and coastal communities. We cannot ignore the fact that burning oil and gas emits harmful carbon dioxide, exacerbating climate change and endangering our way of life.
In the face of worsening climate change, we must transition to sustainable energy sources. Reports from the International Energy Agency (IEA) confirm that the world has ample reserves and approved projects, rendering the search for more oil and gas unnecessary. We must prioritize renewable energy alternatives that safeguard our environment and ensure a sustainable future for all.
We echo the voices of the Ocean and the Communities and people living around the ocean that are relying on the ocean to make a living.
These are some of the affected fishing communities, Priscilla Abrahams, Carmelita Mostert, Riaan Coetzee, and countless others who depend on the ocean for their livelihoods. These communities, the backbone of our nation, are being ignored and disregarded.
The government’s decisions affect their ability to feed their families and provide for their children’s education. It’s time for change, this is not only a cry from these communities but this will affect the Marine live and the ecosystem and biodiversity of the ocean.
The Green Connection’s fight to protect our oceans. Sign our petition and stand against offshore oil and gas exploitation and help to safeguard the ecosystem for future generations and the livelihood of the fishing communities that not only feed their families but provide fish for all of South Africa.
Together, we can safeguard our marine ecosystems, preserve our way of life, and create a sustainable future for generations to come.
