Spring in their swing
Golfers descended on Sedge Links on Wednesday 30 September for one of its four annual seasonal golf days, with last week being the turn for spring to play its best hand.
With the course looking in very good nick, a full field of golfers (72) started out the day at Sedgefield’s mashie course, which is nestled into a neatly compacted arrowhead-shaped piece of land just off the N2, a few kilometres outside of town.
The day was played in the medal format, arguably golf’s toughest as it means the golfer has to play until the ball sinks to the bottom of the cup, with no relief from players or potential of blacking out*. If you’re having a tough day, then it’s just you having a hack at the ball until you can sink a putt.
But, regardless of the competition format, the weather was ideal for golf with but a few clouds in the sky and some light wind that slowly picked up as the day progressed. Having teed off at 09:00, players spent the next 18 holes negating the course’s various hidden traps and treasures in their bid to score as low as possible.

When it came time for prize-giving, Willem de Villiers and Daleen Schooling were tops in the nearest-to-the-pin stakes. In the prize-winning places, Doug Tillie finished sixth (57 shots) on a count-out with Peter Schnetler fifth (57) on the better end of the count-out.
Theo Pelser plays his way out of the bunker.
In fourth place was Almarie Mead (56), third Dave Maylon (54, count-out) and second, Jan Potgieter (54, count-out). But, there could only be one winner, and on the perfect spring day, Rudy Bosch came out tops with a five-under-par score of 53.
*To black out in points formats in golf means a golfer does not get the ball in the hole in the required number of shots to score at least one point. Therefore the player picks their ball up and does not continue until they finish the hole.
Almarie Mead’s umbrella is blown loose by a sudden gust of wind.
