Six people appeared in the Knysna Magistrate’s Court on Monday on charges of kidnapping and extortion of a 20-year-old Concordia man on Saturday 24 October.
Hynich Bowie (29), Wachein Kietas (24) and Milesh Andrews (23) from Kanonkop in Concordia, Knysna; Afrede Peterse (31) from George; Siyamthanda Nciya (28) from White Location, Knysna; and Luvuyo Mkhetshane (20) from Bongani, Knysna are accused of kidnapping Vernon Jacobs and demanding payment of R2 000 from his father, Antony Jacobs, for his release.
Southern Cape police spokesperson Sergeant Christopher Spies said according to the preliminary investigation, a man contacted the father of the victim telephonically, threatening him and demanding an amount of cash for the release of his son. The father immediately alerted the police who, following leads, found the victim tied up in a house in Concordia at about 22:00 on Saturday.
“Vigilant members attached to the Knysna Visible Policing and Crime Prevention Unit descended on the house where they found the victim on the floor with his hands and feet tied with a rope. A further search of the premises resulted in the arrest of six suspects and the confiscation of a cellphone that belongs to one of them,” he revealed.
The case was postponed to 30 October for bail information and all six suspects are still in custody.
