The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has alerted residents to brace for a significant weather event encompassing cold spells, widespread rainfall, and potential flooding across various regions of South Africa.
A robust weather system, identified as a cut-off low, is set to sweep through the country starting this weekend and persisting until Tuesday, according to SAWS.
This cut-off low originated along the western coastline on Saturday afternoon before advancing towards the Northern Cape on Sunday. It is projected to traverse the interior of the Western Cape by Monday and exit along its southern coast by Tuesday, April 9th.
Widespread showers and thundershowers are expected to develop over much of the country… and will continue until at least Tuesday where after calm and clear weather conditions will return to many areas.
Anticipate widespread showers and thundershowers covering extensive areas of the country during this period, with conditions expected to gradually ease by Tuesday, ushering in calmer weather.
However, the persistent showers and thundershowers could lead to localized flooding, particularly in central and eastern regions, primarily from Sunday into Monday. Furthermore, the western interior might experience severe thunderstorms characterized by heavy rainfall and small hail from Sunday into Monday.
Specifically, parts of the Overberg and the southwest coast of the Western Cape are forecasted to encounter heavy rainfall as the cut-off low departs along the southern coast of the province by Monday into Tuesday.
Additionally, coastal areas along the Cape’s southwest coast could encounter strong to gale force south-easterly winds, potentially impacting maritime activities. Expect cooler temperatures across various provinces, with daytime highs ranging from the high teens to low twenties in most areas and dropping to the low teens in elevated regions of the Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal.
SAWS remains vigilant and will provide updates as the weather system evolves. Stay informed through www.weathersa.co.za and the SA Weather Service X account @SAWeatherServic for the latest updates.
