Local club and Safa Eden Men’s Regional League rookies Red Eagles have soared to the top of the table following two more victories this past weekend.
Prior to the weekend’s games, Red Eagles had won 75% of their games (six out of eight, drawing one game and losing one).
This dazzling run of form is thanks to the fact that they have played most of their matches on home soil so far, with the daunting task of playing more games away from home lying in wait in the second half of the season.
Red Eagles have been consistently drawn to face the same opponents as Plettenberg Bay outfit Oriented Birds (Obi) whenever their match day fixtures were set up.
Last weekend the two clubs were scheduled to face Young Pirates and Eastern City on Sunday 28 November. Red Eagles’ games would be played at Loerie Park while Obi’s games took place in Kwanokuthula.
Young Pirates were the first to face Red Eagles and the home side managed to edge out their opponents 3-2. Obi also enjoyed a victorious start to the day, beating Eastern City 3-0. In their second fixtures of the day the opponents were reversed.
Red Eagles were again victorious, beating Eastern City 2-1, while Obi beat young Pirates 1-0. While Red Eagles and Obi were battling it out in Knysna and Plett, the other two Knysna sides in the league, FC United and CX Celtics, faced previous log leaders Peacemakers and Benfica.
Peacemakers managed to overcome CX Celtics with a score of 2-1 and FC United beat Benfica 2-0. In the reverse fixtures, CX Celtics and Benfica drew 2-2 and FC United and Peacemakers drew 2-2 as well.
The outcome of the second game cost Peacemakers their top spot in the league. Courtesy of their two wins and full complement of six points, Red Eagles overcame the initial two-point gap to Peacemakers and climbed to first place on the log.
