Petition for traffic regulations
Five hundred Sedgefield residents signed a petition drafted by Albert Angerer against, not only, the alarming rate of car accidents on the N2 (almost one every two weeks), but also the constant speeding and increasing noise level of traffic passing through what should be a ‘slow’ town.
“It looks peaceful, but it isn’t,” says a determined Angerer, who came to South Africa from Germany as a 22-year-old.
“Something needs to be done about this road – maybe speed cameras and a big board to say no air-brakes in town?”
He also requested a meeting with prominent roleplayers, explaining to the Knysna mayor, Georlene Wolmarans, that the situation needs immediate attention.
“A few months ago I couldn’t sleep and I counted 28 trucks speeding by in a single hour. We only have one traffic cop. If anyone else dies here in an accident which could have been avoided with the correct safety measures in place, they will be able to sue, for sure.”
According to Angerer, Wolmarans promised that tenders for speed cameras and a board will be issued soon.
