One phone call can ruin your computer
In yet another scam, criminals phone claiming to work for Microsoft.
A resident from Wilderness, George Edeltraud Kopp received such a call.
Kopp said the caller said that she’s calling from Microsoft and that his computer was infected with a virus and that she would like to help him get rid of the virus.
“Immediately I was suspicious, as I could not believe Microsoft is phoning people out of the blue telling them their computer is infected. I did some research with an internet expert and he gave me a website address – http://www.snopes.com/fraud/telephone/microsoft.asp – to visit.
“On the site, Microsoft says they do not make unsolicited phone calls to help you fix your computer.Once the crooks have gained your trust, they attempt to steal from you and damage your computer with malware (malicious software), including viruses and spyware.”
“Microsoft says that if you receive such calls you must hang up before the crooks get what they want.”
