National Loadshedding Status Update: 17 August 2023
Current Stages: 1 and 3 Rotation
Stage 3 load-shedding is in effect with a rotation between Stage 1 and Stage 3.
Following that period, from 05:00 to 16:00, Stage 1 load-shedding will be implemented. This cycle will repeat daily until further notice. Eskom will release updates if any significant changes occur.
Currently, breakdowns have impacted 16,054MW of generating capacity, and planned maintenance has taken 3,921MW of generating capacity out of service.
In the last 24 hours, generating units at Camden, Duvha, Kriel, and Lethabo power stations have been brought back online. However, during the same time frame, a generating unit at Tutuka and two at Kendal power stations have been taken offline for repairs.
The delay in bringing generating units at Kendal, Matimba, and Tutuka Power Stations back online is contributing to the ongoing capacity constraints. Eskom’s teams are working diligently to restore these generating units to service.
We urge the public to continue reducing their electricity demand by turning off non-essential appliances. We extend our gratitude to those who have heeded the call to use electricity wisely, including switching off geysers and pool pumps between 17:00 and 21:00. This concerted effort reduces demand, eases pressure on the power system, and aids in mitigating the extent of load-shedding.
Eskom would like to remind the public that load-shedding is implemented only as a last resort to protect the national grid. We, therefore, urge all South Africans to continue using electricity sparingly, especially during these uncertain times on the power system.
Important information:
Every stage includes the stages before them, i.e. stage 4 includes stages 1, 2,3, and 4.
Stage 1 requires 1000MW,
Stage 2 requires 2000MW,
Stage 3 requires 3000MW,
Stage 4 calls for 4000MW,
Stage 5 calls for 5000MW,
Stage 6 calls for 6000MW,
Stage 7 calls for 7000MW,
Stage 8 calls for 8000MW to load shed nationally at a given period rotationally. Load Shedding is conducted rotationally as a measure of last resort to protect the power system.
Eskom continues to appeal to residents and businesses to use electricity sparingly during this period. Please switch off geysers as well as all non-essential lighting and electrical appliances to assist in reducing demand.
