Mashie fun at charity golf day
Hamilton’s Property Portfolio in Sedgefield in conjunction with the SWD Eagles Rugby Union held their first annual charity golf tournament in aid of The Living Cornerstone (TLC) Alzheimer Residences at Sedge Links Golf Course on Sunday 6 October.
A total of 52 players – 34 men and 18 women – participated in the tournament. The winners were Clint Jones with a score of 42 and Linda Evans with a score of 40 for the women.
The day was a huge success and the organisers thanked all the sponsors and players for their participation.
TLC founder Gilda Scammel explained they currently have three homes with 25 residents in total.
“We used to rent all three homes but were very fortunate recently to get a R2-million donation to buy one of the homes. It so happened that one of our residents is related to a popular beverage company who made the donation,” she explained.
Scammel started Sedge Mobile Meals in 2007 and while delivering food it came to her attention that an 89-year-old man with Alzheimer’s was being scammed by the homeless. “Unbeknown to him, they took his food and used his Sassa card to steal all his money every month. The seed was planted in 2008 and after a lot of praying, I registered The Living Cornerstone as an NPO in 2012 and acquired our first home in 2013. We started out as a day-care centre only, but after only one month opened full-time because of dire need. Six months later we opened the second home and six months after that the third – three homes in just 18 months! That is why I am always busy fundraising,” explained Scammel.
It is very important for her to preserve the feeling of homeliness. “We provide homes and don’t want to be an institution. We are a family who looks after and take care of each other,” said Scammer.
The union’s acting CEO Vida Manie and vice president Ben Brinkhuis attended the day as guests along with some of the SWD Eagles Rugby players.
“SWD Eagles Rugby Union look forward to their partnership with The Living Cornerstone organisation regarding future events,” said Brinkhuis.
