Local Dance Schools Shine at the Nelson Mandela Bay Dance Festival in Gqeberha
Gqeberha recently witnessed a spectacular showcase of talent at the Nelson Mandela Bay Dance Festival, where young dancers from the Western and Eastern Cape provinces gathered to display their skills. Among the standout performers were representatives from Knysna-based dance schools, Carmen’s School of Dance and the Sidwell Roman School of Ballet, who made their mark during the festival held from August 21 to 26.
In total, Knysna had 34 talented dancers participating, contributing to a dazzling array of 84 dance performances over the course of the event.
**Carmen’s School of Dance**
Carmen’s School of Dance proved to be a force to be reckoned with at the festival. Thirteen of their dancers showcased their talent through an impressive 30 dance items. The students and studio received recognition in the form of 19 gold medals and 11 silver awards.
Celyn Godfrey, a standout performer from Carmen’s School of Dance, clinched the title of the age category winner in the Girls 11-12 years Ballet Section. Additionally, she earned the prestigious adjudicator’s choice award for Best Junior Dancer across all genres and age categories.
Madison Starkey secured the title of the overall age category winner in the Girls 13-14 years Ballet Section, further solidifying the school’s dominance.
One of the highlights of the festival was Carmen’s School of Dance’s Demi-Character Trio performance titled “Time for Tea,” skillfully danced by Madison Starkey, Celyn Godfrey, and Aneeqa Loxton. Their exceptional performance was recognized with the coveted Hermie Trophy for Best Group/Ensemble Piece, surpassing competitors from all sections, age groups, and dance genres. The trio’s talent also earned them a spot at the prestigious gala evening on Saturday night, where they captivated the audience with their remarkable skills, making it a night to remember for all attendees.
