Why drive to become part of SA’s road death stats?
On January 13 at about 10:15 we were driving from Plett to Knysna when passed at high speed by a Thompsons Tours bus.
At the Garden of Eden, we were slowed down by the same bus when its driver promptly put on his indicator to turn right and, with total disregard for two large ‘No Right Turn’ signs, proceeded to cross a double line into the parking area.
He had obviously been given instructions to take clients there and that was where he was going, irrespective of road rules.
This could have caused a horrific accident as there were vehicles travelling in both directions when he promptly stopped in the right-hand lane, waiting for traffic to pass before he could turn. He actually stopped completely in line with one of the signs.
Not only was the driver putting his passengers’ lives at risk, but also the lives of all other road users. He could have added to the long list of fatal taxi accidents, as his vehicle was the same size as a large taxi.
Not long afterwards, a small car passed us – as well as the two cars in front of us – on a double barrier line and on a corner.
What is wrong with drivers on the roads today? Surely they read the newspapers and see on TV the number of people killed on our roads over the Christmas period. Do they want to becomepart of those statistics?
And where are the traffic cops when you need one? Under a tree with a camera, of course…
