Outeniqua Pass closed
At the road closure coordination meeting held earlier today the District Roads Engineer confirmed that the company, Penny Farthing, has been appointed to do the rehabilitation works of the rock fall area on the Outeniqua Pass.
The consulting engineers Kantey and Temper will supervise the works. Construction has commenced with the removal of rocks and boulders on the crest of the rock fall area. On Monday 29/08/2011 explosives will be used to loosen the remaining rocks and boulders on the crest of the rock fall area. The area has been fenced off by the contractor and should be considered extremely dangerous.
NO UNAUTHORISED ENRY WOULD BE ALLOWED TO THE AREA
All indications are that the Outeniqua Pass will be closed until the middle of September 2011.
Due to rain and slippery road conditions the Montagu Pass had to be closed.
At this stage the only alternative route linking George and Oudtshoorn is the Robinson Pass.
A follow-up meeting with both the consulting engineers as well as the appointed contractor has been scheduled to take place on Friday the 2nd of September 2011 at 10:00 in the joint operational centre of the Eden District Municipality, York Street 54, George.
