Knysna cop is on the ball
Quick action by a Knysna police officer led to the arrest of a panga-wielding suspect who allegedly robbed a pedestrian on Friday 18 September.
According to Southern Cape police spokesperson Sergeant Christopher Spies, Warrant Officer Phillip Nqayi was on his way to town from Hornlee on Friday morning when a passer-by alerted him to two men, one armed with a panga, being chased by a third man on the footpath near the N2 highway.
Spies said the man chasing them had allegedly been robbed of cash, cigarettes as well as a jacket.
“The warrant officer approached the men when he was threatened by one of them and a scuffle ensued. Other policemen later joined and the suspect was restrained. The police arrested the suspect on charges of robbery with aggravating circumstances and possession of a dangerous weapon,” said Spies.
He added that the items recovered during the arrest were returned to the victim. “The suspect, Dhean Smith (26), appeared in court on Monday 21 September 2020 and the matter was postponed to 29 September for a formal bail application,” Spies stated.
He said Knysna police station management commended Nqayi for ensuring that the suspect is brought to book.
