Kings and Queens of Oyster Fest Chess crowned
While there were numerous physical battles fought in various sports disciplines during the Oyster Festival, battles of a different kind were being waged inside Knysna High School’s hall as chess players from as far as Port Elizabeth and Mossel Bay made the trek to Knysna for the 2019 Knysna Knights Oyster Festival chess tournament on Sunday 30 June.
The tournament included players of all ages, and participants as young as seven years old took on much older players to try to become the king or queen of the castle.
Hundreds of matches were played in the chilly high school hall, with onlookers eagerly locked in on the action at play in front of their eyes.

While many a pawn threatened to make the right move, there was only one king throughout the course of the day as third-seeded Port Elizabethan Claude van Heerden managed to move his way into first place with 5.5 points (out of a possible six), while George resident George Swart wasn’t far behind in second place with five points, and Mossel Bay’s own Ralph Cloete in third.
In the U18 category, Christiano Heynse from Riversdale won gold, Jerome Daniels from Mossel Bay won silver, and Luciano Stuurman from Riversdale won bronze. In the U14 category, Reuben Daniels from Mossel Bay won gold, Tyler Nevin won silver, and Sachin Kruger from Pacaltsdorp won bronze. Kea Holroyd from Port Elizabeth won a gold medal for the best girl of the day.
