Global Education Campaigns call for public quality education
The Global Action Week for Education (#GAWE2019) campaign calls on the government to take action towards quality education. Launching at the Sunnyside hotel last Wednesday, Global Education Campaign was initially launched in 1999 as a build up to the world education forum in Dakar.
South Africa Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga as one of the keynote speaker said in South Africa basic education is at a critical point that demands stronger commitments from all partners to ensure timely delivery of free education for their Agenda 2030.
“Our constitution enshrines basic education as a human right and the state must ensure this right is available and accessible to everyone, “said Motshekga.
One of the missions of the campaign is to ensure it provides a platform for civil societies voices in relation to the world global education agenda.
Mungwena Maluleke the vice president of the GCE and general secretary of the South African Democratic Teachers Union SADTU said it is important for activists to come together and coordinate themselves to influence government.
“One of the ambitions is to influence government to guarantee a right to education, not just education but quality public education and we believe that quality public education is achievable as it is central to us,” said Maluleke.
He added: “If we work together to lobby and advocate government through the United Nations and through any other platform as civil society being active on the ground on foundation to global level we can be able to have that commitment by government to ensure that whether the child is disabled, girl child or an adult will have a better access to education,” he said.
