Building towards world title
Clayton Kiewitz, yet another promising bodybuilding prospect from Knysna, is looking forward to the IFBB World Junior Championships coming up next month, having qualified at the national event last month.
The Knysna born-and-raised Clayton (23) grew up alongside his older brother Maxwell Kiewitz who is one of the pioneers of the bodybuilding community on the Garden Route.
He saw his brother train a number of athletes from all sorts of sports disciplines over the years, and in 2018 decided he wants in on the action. So he decided to take up bodybuilding in the men’s athletic physique division. Clayton’s first bodybuilding competition came in the form of the 2018 Physical Culture Association (PCA) Destiny – Rise of Iron show, which would be the only competition he took part in his debut year. “I only did one show last year just to prove to myself that I can do it,” Clayton said. He would then make the move to the International Federation of Bodybuilding (IFBB) in 2019 and won his division in the MaxFITT Knysna Bodybuilding Show on 6 April.
This win qualified him for the provincial competition on 24 August, when he once again walked away with the top prize, subsequently earning himself a spot in the national contest in September. Clayton would fall just shy of the top spot there but still managed to finish second in his division and earn himself a spot in the international championships set to take place from 22 to 25 November in Hungary.
Maxwell is “extremely proud” of his brother, as he has always believed Clayton has what it takes. “I always knew he had it in him, and I have always said that he is among the world’s best, and now he can finally prove it,” he said. Maxwell is the founder of MaxFITT and chairperson of the IFBB in the Eden District.
Clayton is well into his preparations for the world event, with most of his documents in order, and only one step remaining – to secure additional funding for the trip to Hungary, as it can be a costly venture.
IFBB is the only bodybuilding association that grants athletes Protea colours, with Clayton set to receive his at an award ceremony this weekend,12 October.
