Wessa’s Coastal Geology Tour is back by popular demand, offering a self-drive day trip from Mossel Bay to Hoekwil that promises to unveil the secrets of our natural history. Guided by experts Paul Rixom, Peter Ginn, and Gavin O’Connell-Jones, this adventure is a must for anyone with an interest in the Earth’s ever-changing landscapes.
The Garden Route, renowned for its breathtaking scenery, hides a wealth of coastal geology and land-forming processes that often go unnoticed by the untrained eye. During this enlightening tour, you’ll gain insight into the evolution of our South African coastline and the incredible power of erosion over millions of years. Discover how certain sediments formed during the early breakup of Gondwana and the birth of the first South African coastline.
As you journey further, you’ll explore the development of modern coastal dunes and their fossilized ancestors, along with the mesmerizing coastal lagoons that grace the area. Delve into the paleontological treasures hidden beneath the surface and learn about valuable mineral deposits such as gold and offshore gas.
The entire drive serves as a captivating illustration of various sedimentary and coastal erosion processes, with occasional igneous granite intrusions adding a unique twist to the geological narrative. The tour is meticulously organized, with route directions provided for planned stops at locations like Groot-Brak, Herold’s Bay, Victoria Bay, and more. Each small group, consisting of a maximum of 20 participants, will have the opportunity to explore these sites and perhaps take a short walk.
To ensure your comfort throughout the day, remember to pack refreshments, a picnic lunch, and camping chairs. The adventure begins at Mossel Bay at 08:00 and concludes in the afternoon at a scenic viewpoint on the road to Hoekwil.
Participation in this enlightening tour requires a registration fee of R100 per person, payable on the day of the event. Additionally, donations above and beyond the registration fee are warmly welcomed to support Wessa’s educational funds.
