The Knysna Rose Society (KRS) was founded in 2006 by Alan Tew, the previously Chairman of Gold Reef Rose Society (our biggest Rose Society here in SA, they sit up in Johannesburg).

Ahe current Chairperson is Stefany Seydack, a Knysna local. She is also President of ROSA (Rose Association of South Africa).

Sheenagh Harris is current President of World Federation of Rose Societies (WFRS) and past President of Federation of Rose Societies of South Africa (ROSA). She lives in Johannesburg, has a garden with over 400 roses that has featured in many magazines. She is also past Editor of the ROSA Annual and Newsletter. She is also a member of KRS.

Jackie Kalley, owner of ‘Otterly Press’, lives in Johannesburg. She now holds the position of Editor for ROSA and was recently elected WFRS Vice for Africa (that means she will represent the whole of Africa on the WFRS Council (easy as Africa only has on member = ROSA J, there is no other Country on the African Continent that has an organisation like ROSA).

Written by Sheenagh Harris and Jackie Kalley, the book “Veld, Vlei & Rose Gardens” is a collection of over 40 rose gardens in South Africa and features Collectors Gardens, Country and Town Gardens. Each garden has been allocated a chapter that was written by the owners, hence each chapter has a unique writing style!

Carol and John Kennedy kindly agreed to open their house and garden for the book launch. John and Carol managed “Baynsfield” estate in the late 1990. “Baynsfield” gardens have a chapter in the book.

Hilary Blowe organised the catering for the Cheese and Wine function. Food was donated by: Chaplins, Nauticus and several members of KRS.

Rae Gilbert (who attended the book launch yesterday) and Linda Stevens are members of KRS. Both have gardens near Knysna and both have a Chapter in the book All in all KRS has three members (Sheenagh) that have gardens published in the book.

Carl Krim, a recent addition to KRS, kindly agreed to take photos at the Cheese and Wine function. He is an ex Capetonian who relocated to the Garden Route not so long ago. As yet he is clueless in growing roses but KRS is adamant that once he has his garden this will change J and he will become a master rose grower – just as addicted to our favourite flower as the rest of us.
