Knysna Sedgefield Hospice celebrated 25 years of existence with a book launch attended by over 120 people on Thursday 24th November. In 1986 a doctor from Knysna – Dr. Joan Louwrens and a nurse from Sedgefield, Sue Brukman, started working together to help those who needed care at home. There was no name, no office, no funding, no mission statement – simply two people caring for others. This was the start of the Knysna Sedgefield Hospice.

Twenty five years later, we have 40 staff members, hundreds of volunteers, a fleet of 10 vehicles, 2 shops and a wonderful clinic and office centre. But the essence of the organisation remains the same – people working together to care. The book attempts to pull together different strands of the story of these 25 years and is told through words and pictures. The words come from the pens of over 40 individuals – and like everything good in Hospice, the book is the result of a team effort.

Mr. Richard Dawson represented the mayor and cut the ribbon at the launch! Amongst our significant sponsors was Rob Duncan from Komatsu, who contributed generously towards the publishing and printing of the book. Many of the original founders of Hospice including Dr. Joan Louwrens, and Millie White – the first local fundraiser were there to celebrate and reminisce.

The evening was a buzz of stories old and new. The Hospice Chairman, David Bath thanked all involved in writing the stories and many went home clutching a treasure of photos and memoirs to share with others. Books are available at Hospice in Knysna, and at the Hospice Shop in Sedgefield for R100 each.
