Knysna Forest Marathon is a Boost Knysna Economy
The Knysna Oyster Festival, starting on Friday, 21 June, and concluding on 30 June with the two-day Knysna Cycle Tour, will kick off with the much-anticipated Knysna Forest Marathon. This event is set to significantly benefit local businesses, particularly those affiliated with the Knysna Accommodation Association.
Colleen Harding, a member of the association and owner of a guest house in Paradise, reported that her establishment is fully booked for the marathon weekend. She anticipates that most other B&Bs, self-catering units, and hotels in the association will experience similar occupancy rates.
“I expect the majority of accommodations to be fully booked over the marathon weekend,” Harding said.
Unlike cyclists, who often need to budget for expensive equipment and have a plethora of events to choose from, marathon runners tend to spend more time and money in Knysna. Harding noted, “Runners spend more time and money at establishments in Knysna than cyclists.”
While accommodation is readily available during the cycling weekend, the marathon sees about 6,000 runners from across the country flocking to Knysna. This year, the event will feature legendary Comrades Marathon runner Bruce Fordyce among its participants.
Runners can choose between the 42.2km full marathon and the 21.1km half marathon, ensuring a variety of options for athletes of different levels, you can go here for more details.
