The King of the Hill event at the Jaguar Simola Hillclimb kicked off on Saturday May 6 with it’s fair share of exciting moments.

Paige Lindenberg in her 2016 Shelby Super Snake left the track on her first practice run, luckily she soon had the car back on track.

Race legend Peter Lindenberg flew up the hill in a 2016 Ford Ranger 525.

Desmond Gutzeit in his 1993 Nissan GT-R R32 had set up the fastest time on the hill, completing his run in 44.074 seconds at a top speed of 155.194 km/h.

André Bezuidenhout in his 1989 Dallara Formula set the only sub-40 second time of the day. He completed in a time of 39.446 seconds beating 2016’s King of the Hill, Franco Scribante who set up a time of 41.092 seconds.

The top four after practice:

1. André Bezuidenhout, 1989 Dallara Formula 1 – 39.446 seconds

2. Franco Scribante, 1972 Chevron B26 – 41.092 seconds

3. Robert Wolk, 2004 Formula Renault F Renault – 41.314 seconds

4. Wilhelm Baard, 2014 Nissan GT-R – 41.420 seconds

Clerk of the course Sparky Bright commented on what an absolutely excellent event it was. “We had no problems at all which was great; and it’s always good to come to Knysna. The local residents really welcomed Motorsport SA with open arms,” he said.

André Bezuidenhout in his 1989 Dallara Formula 1 beat last year’s King of the Hill, Franco Scribante, in his 1972 Chevron B26, taking the title of the ultimate King of the Hill for 2017.

Bezuidenhout broke the track record by more than a second in 37.695 seconds, averaging a speed of 181.456 km/h up the almost 2 km hill.

Scribante completed in 39.605 seconds averaging 172.705 km/h, while Robert Wolk in his 2004 Formula Renault came in 3rd with a time of 40.121 seconds averaging a speed of 170.484 km/h.

In the Road and Supercar Shootout Reghard Roets, nephew of famous South African filmmaker Koos Roets, came out on top in his 2015 Nissan GTR.

The Single Seater and Sports Car Shootout was won by Bezuidenhout, while Wilhelm Baard took top honours in the Modified Saloon Car Shootout with his 2014 Nissan GT-R.

Well done to the organisers and participants for yet another successful Simola Hillclimb.
