2 Netherlands women cycling Garden Route
Netherlands women are to cycle to raise awareness of the dangers of alcohol during pregnancy.
Two women from the Netherlands are going to cycle 404km of the Garden Route to raise money for education at a local school.
Esther Vuijk and Esther Blaauwwiekel have been volunteering at the Rheenendal Primary School and have been inspired by this experience to raise money.
“We are Esther and Esther, both from the Netherlands. We have been volunteering in Rheenendal since April,” explains Vuijk.
“While working at the Rheenendal Primary School and talking to Devoline Koopman from the Youth Centre we have seen the necessity of education about Foetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) which is caused by drinking during pregnancy,” says Vuijk.
“The consequences [of drinking during pregnancy] are serious and we feel that the children are currently not receiving the help and education that they need.
“With charting the problem our main goal is to create and execute ways of spreading awareness and knowledge for FASD and appropriate education.”
In order to raise this money from 25 October until the 3 November the two Esthers, as they call themselves, will cycle the entire 404km of the Garden Route.
“In order to reach our objectives and to make the race a success, we need sponsors for accommodation, equipment and clothing and also financial funds,” explains Vuijk.
The pair will start their cycle in Port Elizabeth on 25 October and pass Plettenberg Bay on 29 October, Knysna on the 30 October and Sedgefield on 31 and then Wilderness on 1 November and George on 2 November.”
“We hope that we will get assistance to make this possible and are looking forward to hearing from those who wish to support us. If you have any questions or ideas, please let us know.”
