Surf fishing in Jeffreys Bay

Jeffreys Bay offers brilliant surf fishing in great surroundings. The pristine beaches are perfect for the whole family – there is plenty to do to keep the young ones occupied!  Most of the beaches have rock pools for the kids and many shells lie along the shores for the picking.

To the east of Jeffreys Bay we have the Gamtoos River Mouth and to the south west, the Kromme river mouth. You will often see the locals visit these two places by bicycle during low tide. There are various fish and tackle shops that cater for all your needs from rock & surf to boating supplies and our people in the know offer expert advice.

Getting ready to catch 'the big one'

Getting ready to catch ‘the big one’

Being a local myself I have been fishing our waters for over 3 years, my achievements being both big and small. However I cannot compare to our more senior anglers who seem to know exactly where to be at exactly the right time. This skill takes years of trial and error to perfect.

Fishing in Jeffreys Bay consists of both edible and non edible fish which can provide hours of fun next to the water. Both heavy and ultra light tackle fishing can be done at various spots in and around Jeffrey Bay.

My favourite fishing spots
Cob/Kabeljou

Cob/Kabeljou

Kabeljous

Kabeljous is situated on the eastern side of Jeffreys Bay. Here we target mostly edible fish with live bait being the first choice. If you take a walk towards the Gamtoos you could get yourself onto a Cob or Garrick on artificial lures.

Checkers

A very under rated spot in Jbay but best not to fish alone here, safety in numbers!  Mostly edibles will be caught here: Blacktail, Mussel Cracker, White Steenbras , Cob and Grunter.

White Steenbras

White Steenbras

BP

This spot is very similar to the Checkers spot. Again, safety in numbers!  Also a rather productive spot to catch edibles: Blacktail, Bronze Bream, Mussel Cracker, White Steenbras , Cob and Grunter.

Walskipper (Marina)

Shad being the main target from the concrete slab it makes for a very social fishing spot. Other than shad you can also find: Bronze Bream, Blacktail, Mussel Cracker and Bellman.

Ragged Tooth Shark

ParadiseBeach

Here you will find a lot of reef structure and reef fishing dominates. For me the main species to target here is Bronze Bream but you will also find any other reef species here.

Paradise Beach is also well known for its non edible (shark) fishing at the “raggiehole” where it is known for being the best place to either start off or test your skill when it comes to shark fishing.

For more info regarding fishing in Jbay, I suggest finding FISH LIKE A LOCAL, by our own Leon Vermeulen. This book taught me a great deal about fishing spots; what can be caught where and which baits to use.
