Seekoei Nature Reserve

Situated on the scenic Cape South – Eastern Cape the Seekoei nature reserve lies between the coastal villages of Aston Bay & Paradise Beach, approximately 5km south of Jeffreys Bay.

Covering an area of about 66ha where the Seekoei & Swart Rivers meet and form an estuary. Short trails take you around the park and along part of the lagoon edge.

The nature reserve is mainly Kaffrarian Thicket which consists of non-succulent subtropical transitional communities.

 

There is a 1 km hike on the northern section of the reserve which is great for birding as there is a bird hide where the birds can be viewed. 120 Different bird species have so far been identified.

Should you wish to see more of the reserve there is a 3 km hiking trail which can be reached by crossing the river or pantoon.

You can view a few trees that and coastal fynbos with Erica, Passerine & Metalasia species.

Wildlife is rich in this area as you are bound to bump into one of its many inhabitants. Bushbuck, caracal, grysbok, porcupine, blue duiker, bush pig, yellow & grey mongoose & large spotted genet to name a few.

When the weather is good you can spot the flamingoes and there are thousands of red knobbed coots who nest on the lagoon.

You may also visit the Penguin Rehab Centre which is located in the reserve, where they recover after treatment from pollution & exhaustion.

Getting there

The reserve is situated about 5km from Jeffreys Bay in the Aston Bay area. Through Jeffreys Bay follow the Marina Martinique and Aston Bay signs. Upon entering Aston Bay at the stop street you will be on Dolphin Road, continue straight until you get the next 3 way stop. Turn right into Swan Street. On your right you will see a dirt road with signage to the reserve.
