Help to spread the Dream!

A poem that always inspires me and especially now that I get to know some really remarkable Dreamers, is Rudyard Kipling’s The glory of the Garden.
I dedicate it to all Dreamers that make a difference and especially to Willie for whom the loss of a leg is not an impediment and to Hester whose dedication is an inspiration for all.
The Glory Of The Garden
Our England is a garden, and such gardens are not made
By singing:–“Oh, how beautiful!” and sitting in the shade,
While better men than we go out and start their working lives
At grubbing weeds from gravel-paths with broken dinner-knives.
There’s not a pair of legs so thin, there’s not a head so thick,
There’s not a hand so weak and white, nor yet a heart so sick.
But it can find some needful job that’s crying to be done,
For the Glory of the Garden glorifieth every one.

It all starts with one go-getter! Yes, only one ...
A Dream starts with someone that wants to make a difference.
Deline Swart writes:
❝I looked for a place that was very dirty in Jeffrey’s Bay. I took a bag and picked up soiled nappies, bottles, paper etcetera. After a while a volunteer joined me. We cleaned as far as we could.❞
The reaction was overwhelming! People could not believe that we cleaned the filth without payment, using our own bags and dispose of the rubbish (it was before the Municipality gave us a hand).
And so our Team grew person by person. Later we started to cut grass and then beautifying … look at what we are doing now!
❝ It all starts with one go-getter! Yes, only one!! ❞
How can I become more involved?
The realisation is beginning to sink in that we can make a significant difference in making Jeffrey’s Bay a jewel once again.
A small group of woman and men are turning Jeffrey’s Bay around: You ain’t seen nothing yet!
The fact that you are getting this e-mail means that you are already a Dreamer or are involved with other civic organisations.

Dreamers are united in their quest for a clean and safe Jeffrey’s Bay ...
The ‘Dromers’ / ‘Dreamers’ of Jeffreys Bay offer up their time and open their pockets to make Jeffreys Bay a town to be proud of. As you drive down many of the roads you will notice people gardening, weeding and even paving.
Here are a few examples of what we do:
Whale Point on Plane Street
Dreamers are united in their quest for a clean and safe Jeffrey’s Bay.
On other issues such as Thyspunt, politics, religion etcetera we hold widely differing points of view.
How boring life would be if we all thought the same!
The same goes for the growing controversy surrounding the whale watching point at Plane Street.
There are Dreamers for whom I have a great deal of respect that differ on the issue.
I like debate and the free exchange of ideas.
What I do not like is distortion, not stating or not willing to listen to the other side.
In the age of the Internet it is foolish as it is easy to verify facts, get both sides of the issue.
What I also believe in is trying to find common ground and work from there.
One might feel better by waving placards and agitating but does it solve anything?
a stitch in time saves nine ...
Let us save Jeffreys Bay roads
The saying “a stitch in time saves nine” applies to road maintenance, as I will illustrate:
Bitumen enrichment (fog spray) cost about R2/m2, a slurry seal R14/m2 and chip & spray about R40/M2.
Suburban roads have a thin layer of stone chips and bitumen. The function of this layer is to prevent water from getting into the road layers and to provide a hard and durable surface.
The strength of a road comes from the layers below (base and sub base).
The good news is that most of these layers in Jeffrey’s Bay is of a good quality.
The problem is that the bitumen deteriorates over time. Small cracks start to form, resulting in water penetration and eventually potholes.
The life of a road can be significantly increased with a fog spray: a thin layer of bitumen emulsion.
This binds the chips together and fill the small cracks.
It is relatively cheap. At an application rate of 0.15litre/m2 it will cost less than R2/m2
For many sections of our roads, the degeneration is to far gone with potholes becoming common place.
After properly fixing the potholes, a slurry seal should be applied.
Slurry is a mixture of bitumen, crusher dust, cement and water. It is mixed to a creamy consistency and then spread over the road to a thickness of about 4mm
The most expensive component is bitumen at R10.68/litre of which 250 litre is needed for every 1m3 of slurry. The crusher dust costs R206/m3 and the 15Kg cement about R30.
A team of 14 labourers can lay about 5m3/day or at a cost of about R400/m3, concrete mixer included
The total cost is about R3306/m3 or R13.22/m2 (say, R14/m2)
My recommendations:
- If you would like to be part of “Save our roads” action, click on Reply. You do not need any experience, only the willingness to literally get your hands dirty to save our roads! If you have experience in project management or road building, please indicate it on your reply. We will most certainly make good use of your skills!
- We will select a group to talk to the Roads Division of the Municipality in a cooperative manner to see what has been planned in respect of road maintenance for the next year.
- We must then make an systematic assessment of the roads to determine the position and size of all potholes and the general condition of the road – also determine where pot holes are likely to form in the foreseeable future
- As it is going to be very expensive to reseal all of the roads in Jeffrey’s Bay, Aston Bay and Paradise Beach, my provisional suggestion is that we properly fix the potholes and then slurry the area adjacent to the pothole as well because that is where the next potholes are likely to form. For example, slurry the full width of the road for a length of (say) 20m. Apply a fog spray over the whole road, giving it a uniform appearance and extending its life significantly.
- We must be willing to, over and above what the Municipality is planning to do over the next year, get involved to save our roads. The alternative is to ghastly to contemplate

Help to spread the Dream!
- My bakkie en sleepwa
Raak betrokke!

Gister, 11 Oktober, was ons eerste suksesvolle dag as Droom Padmakers!
