JBay Recycling Project
The Rotary club of Jeffreys Bay and Spirals Studio have started a recycle project where children collect, sort and deliver “recyclable material” to and exchange it for tokens.
They can then use the tokens to “shop” for toiletries, food, clothing, school supplies and books.
The materials collected are sold to a local recycler, The Green Guardian. Money earned this way, pays for about 30 percent of stock in the shop. Local businesses and individuals are invited to contribute by way of donations for the shop stock.
This project has many advantages:
- It cleans up our environment.
- Empowers the children to buy what they need by working for it.
- The children look at rubbish in a new way,
- They learn the value of recycling.
- The learn how to budget before you shop.
- Their counting skills improve.
- They are taught not to wait for hand-outs.
