Main Objective:
To create a mutually beneficial sponsorship, whereby we represent & show off your brand at the Nevarest 36 Adventure Race in Pilgrims Rest.
What is Adventure Racing?
“Adventure racing is the ultimate race of human endurance. Teams of four athletes race non-stop, day and night, through courses up to 800 km in length. Each course is a unique journey, including legs of mountain biking, trail running, kayaking, caving, and rope work. Teams must navigate using a map and compass through remote wilderness checkpoints.
The nature of adventure racing means that it occurs throughout the year, in nearly all conditions.
They battle not only other teams but extreme fatigue, sleep deprivation, and unpredictable weather. If one team member quits, the entire team is unclassified. Often just reaching the finish line is a victory.” – AR World Series
Our race will consist of 7 legs which will all have various control points (CP’s) along the route that teams need to collect, the route between CP’s is at the team’s discretion and will be self-navigated with the use of Topographic and other maps. Between each leg teams will arrive at the Transition points (T1-T6) where there will be basic support and security and teams will change disciplines and leave on the next leg. The race is expected to take the leaders around 20hrs to complete, with the race cutoff time being 36hrs and the teams covering about 110km on the MTB, 60km on foot, and 20km paddling down the Blyde river. There is, however, the option to be short coursed on the longer of the cycling and running legs should it be required.
The Race:
We are looking to race the Nevarest 24. Set in the unique Pilgrim’s Rest, Mpumalanga area, this 200 km non-stop course involves Mountain Biking, Trail Running / Hiking, Paddling, Caving & Kloofing / Canyoning will take you through amazing historic sites offering you a fascinating window into the past.
The Nevarest Challenge is the second race of the A1 series, a first of its kind in South Africa. Having been very successful in Australia & New Zealand, they decided to bring the A1 series it to SA, giving SA adventure racers a good chance to race regularly
Who is in the team:
Werner Oosthuizen – Captain, Co-navigator & legend father.
“I am a 38-year-old, happily married, family man, and father to his little called Chloë. I have my own Financial Planning Practice, based in Nelspruit.
I love adventure and basically, just love life. You only die once, you need to live a thousand lives.
My love for adventure includes adventure racing, trail running, mountain biking, and slacklining.”
A proper weekend warrior with some serious amounts of events clocked, from multiple Argus & 94.7 cycle tours, too many MTB & trail running events, and significantly the most experienced Adventure Racer in the team having completed 3 Swazi adventures & a couple shorter distance races.
Emily Clarke – Weapon woman & pro biker.
“I am currently working towards my honors degree in endurance adventure from the University of life. I enrolled at age 15, and the journey has been fantastic! My undergraduate majors are in road cycling and mountain biking and I have accidental minors in trail running, adventure racing, and obstacle course racing. I fund my pursuits by working as a Speech therapist at a neuro-rehabilitation unit in Nelspruit.
My job humbles me on a daily basis. It feeds my appreciation and motivation for continuing to keep the life revs at max in all spheres.
I am passionate about people, health ownership, education, and driving positivity. I believe that success is a habit and knowledge is power!”
Having completed EA (500km non-stop adventure race, the pinnacle of Adventure Racing in SA) in 2014 she has the second greatest AR experience in the team. Having excelled (a good few podiums) in many trail runs, Obstacle course races – her real pace is found on a bicycle, having racked up an 8th at Road cycling nationals & two top 5s in XCM events.
Arnold Aldous – Rapid roadrunner
“With an agricultural background, I have always been keen on being outdoors. Always keen on adventure, but the real journey only started about three years ago when I decided to run the Comrades Marathon. It has been non-stop ever since and the goals are getting bigger.”
Having already completed Multiple ultra-marathons, long-distance bike rides & an Ironman he has set his eyes onto bigger goals, mostly mountain-based…Big goals include the Cederberg Traverse and Expedition Africa, including Skyrun, which I am doing in December.
Robert Le Brun – Navigator & Dress up king.
“Every day is an adventure & I truly love every second of it. My life’s passion & mission is conservation. I live for family, friends, sport & all things outdoors. So Adventure racing, naturally, over the past few years has emerged as my favourite sport. Even though I have been planning to race for many years, I now feel I am more excited than ever to go out and have some fun! ”
Having completed various ultra-marathons, stage races & ultra-endurance events he’s ready raring to go. Even though he has been itching to adventure race for years, it never seemed to work out until the 2018 Transkei Tuff adventure race where he eventually broke his AR drought.
