Did you know that July is plastic-free month?
Will you go plastic-free this July?
This is the question that the Australian Plastic Free July is asking the world. Originally started in Western Australia way back in 2011 with just a handful of members, this organization has grown from strength to strength, now boasting millions of participants across almost 150 countries worldwide.
They launched the official start to this year’s Plastic Free July challenge on World Environment Day – Tuesday 5 June.
The theme was Beat Plastic Pollution – by taking the challenge to #ChooseToRefuse single-use plastic we can all be part of the solution to what the UN Environment refers to as ‘one of the greatest environmental challenges of our time’.
Did you know scientists estimate that by 2050 there will be more plastic than fish in the world’s oceans? About half of all plastic produced is for single-use or disposable items such as packaging. By bringing your own reusable shopping bags, remembering reusable coffee cups and water bottles, and avoiding pre-packaged fruit and vegetables you can help make a difference. Sign-up to receive support during the month and you won’t be alone. You’ll be joining over 2 million people from 150 countries in making a difference. Avoid landfills, reduce your eco-footprint and protect the ocean from plastic pollution.
Hoedspruit has recently started making noise about our plastic problem with various suppliers coming into town offering alternatives to plastic. Follow them on Facebook via their public page; Hoedspruit – Single Use Plastic Free Zone
