Beaches In Hermanus | Voelklip Beach
Voelklip Beach, Hermanus is situated, as the name says, in the suburb of Voelklip, Hermanus.
This beach is one of the most popular beaches amongst locals and makes for a great vantage point to (as my surfing father says) “check the surf”. This beach in Hermanus is a favourite amongst those looking to tan and relax.
For the sun seekers…
There is a small parking area, but definitely not enough parking for the festive season crowds, so you may have to park in the street and walk down to the beach in season. The parking lot and streets above the beach are all tarred, so be sure to pack sandals to avoid the “hop-scotch” walk down.
The beach has a sloping grass section for those looking to catch a few rays and plenty of changing rooms, bathrooms
and cold showers. The beach has a relative incline and quite a few steps down, so maybe not the best beach for an elderly or physically handicapped person.
The beach is not very big, at least not big enough to play touch rugby or bat-and-ball without seriously disturbing other beachgoers. As the tide makes its way in, there is little of the sandy beach left, so be careful of plonking down your goodies for the day if you do not want them to wash away.
Tides and currents are generally mild at Voelklip beach, and the waves are on the small side, great for messing about on a bodyboard!
During the festive season, there are lifeguards on the beach for peace of mind. You are encouraged to listen to them as they know the tides and where the rip currents are.
Ice-cream trucks make their turns, so keep an eye out for them. For those looking to quench their thirst and catch a bite to eat, there is a coffee shop up the road.
Overall, Voelklip Beach is a great place to work on your summer tan!
