Hermanus Wine Routes, Brandy Routes & Local Breweries
It’s worth stating at the outset that Hermanus is predominantly a wine producing area. There isn’t much in the way of breweries in this corner of the Cape Winelands, nor is there a brandy route (see Stellenbosch). Hermanus has over 30 wine estates, wine farms and cellars and three official Wine Routes: The ‘Hermanus Wine Route R320’ consisting of the ‘Hemel en Aarde Valley’, ‘Upper Hemel en Aarde Valley’ and ‘Hemel en Aarde Ridge’, the ‘Stanford Wine Route’ and the excellent ‘Botrivier/Bot River Wine Route.’ Possibly best known is the Hemel en Aarde Route (Wine Route R320), not least because of the beautiful name – Hemel en Aarde means ‘Heaven and Earth’, but also because there are 17 wine producers on the coastal route and many places to enjoy wine tastings just a couple of kms inland after doing some whale-watching…a unique aspect that adds to the overall appeal of wine tourism in Hermanus.
