Things To Do In Swellendam

Swellendam is one of those best kept secrets of the Overberg.

There are lots of things to do in Swellendam. If you are a history fanatic, sports lover, wildlife junkie, fine food fan or just looking for a good break this town has it all on offer!

Places to see and things to do…

Spa TreatmentFor the ladies, there are beauty salons the village full. The Rain Forest Day Spa launched by the bath product company RAIN has a spa menu ranging from wraps, masks, and hot stone massages. Treat yourself to a reflexology or aromatherapy treatment at the Mountain View Cottage with internationally trained specialist Jeanette.

Sip on a delectable glass of wine and dine on the best baked country goods at any one of the restaurants in Swellendam.

The Stormsvlei Farm Stall and Restaurant ingredients are all Jamsourced locally and their mixed menu suites all tastes. Roosje van die Kaap Restaurant definitely requires a booking in advance.

The old stable block was converted into what is now one of the most frequented spots in Swellendam. Dishes ranged from French cuisine to Cape Malay. From snails to beef fillet you will not be disappointed when dining at this historical restaurant.

The Rasondale Farm Stall is the perfect place to stop if passing through. They stock jams, biltong, nuts, and fresh bakes. The restaurant serves warm muffins and huge scones, enjoy these while soaking in the surrounding Hikingmountain views.

If you are a wildlife and outdoor fanatic you will be surprised at the array of activities that you can partake in. The Swellendam Hiking Trail that makes up a further mix of routes is situated 3 kilometres outside of town. The trail is tough and it is advised that you be fit enough and serious about hiking in order to partake. The route passes through cliffs and gorges. The trail is 81 KM and takes over 6 days to complete. Hikers can enjoy the fynbos, birds and take a dip in the rivers along the route.

BontebokAvid hikers and fishermen should head to the Bontebok National Park. There are many hiking trails on offer and while on the trails you will come across mountain zebra and bontebok. There are prime fishing spots along the Breede River. Mountain biking trails in Swellendam are also found in the park.

On the perfect summer, evenings jump onboard the Buffelsjags Dam Sundowner Cruise. With a cocktail in hand, this is surely the best way to enjoy your vacation.

GolfThe Swellendam Golf Course is a 9 hole, 72 par golf course and offers golfers the most amazing views of the countryside. Once your rounds have been played stop in at the bar or sample something off the “chilli dipper” menu.

Two Trails horse trails will take you through the beautiful mountain ranges and they cater to all levels of experience. For the more advanced riders, there are full day out rides where you can enjoy a riverside picnic.

Berry PickingThe Berry Farm in Swellendam grows youngberries, blue berries and black berries and during their harvest time, you are encouraged to pick your own. The Harvest time is from November till mid December. Phone beforehand and bring your own containers. This is a great activity for the whole family.

For something truly unique join the Swellendam Star Gazers on Monday evenings. The presentations are between 40 and 60 minutes long. There is also an option to have a 3 course meal should you want to make the evening even more special.

Fairy Sanctuary

The Sulina Fairy Sanctuary is situated in a house and garden and has hundreds of faeries on display. Grown men and boys won’t find this very interesting but for little girls, the trip will be delightful!

Why not pick your own lavender? The Lavender Farm in Swellendam produces oils, creams, and soaps.

Pop into the Kunstehuijs Fine Art Gallery and admire all the art pieces that they have in their collection. Meander along to the Bukkenburg Pottery studio.

PotteryThe showroom is filled with handcrafted ceramics from dinner plates to cups, you will find it all.

Visit the Drostdy Museum which was built in 1747 and served as the magistrates offices. There are several houses and gardens to wander through. The Goal near the museum was a building that served as the local jail, stop by for a hot cup of coffee and view the many art works in the art gallery. Another awe inspiring historical stop is the Dutch Reformed Church in Swellendam.
