Things To Do In McGregor

McGregor is a quaint, countryside town. The “dorpie” is where you can slow down, take a breather and relax.

There is a colourful collection of artists, select wine estates and beautiful valley’s to explore. For passers by and visitors alike there are a multitude of things to do in McGregor!

Tranquil country side…

WineWine lovers will be delighted in the fine wines on offer at any one of the wine estates in McGregor. Buitenhof Wine Estate allows you to do wine tasting surrounded by the picturesque fynbos hills and mountains. The McGregor Winery started in 1948 and now compromises over 35 producers. Any wine fundi will be thrilled in the diverse range that is on offer at the estate. Lord’s Winery produces a tantalizing bubbly to be savoured any time of the day along with a range of Pinot Noir, Shiraz and more. Tangara Private Cellar that produces a Zen Gardenhandful of red wines. Wine tasting is by appointment only but well worth it if you love a glass of good red wine. Buffalo Creek offers discerning drinkers a range of Chardonnay, Pinotage, Rose and Merlot, yummy!

For a breath of fresh air head to the Temenos Gardens. Stroll amongst the lush plant life and hear the birds singing in the trees. At Temenos visitors are welcome to experience and come across the sacred even if you follow a traditional religion Hikersor not. Take a stroll around the spiral garden and open up to being spiritually aware of one’s self. There is also a Zen Garden where one is allowed to meditate or rake away your troubles.

There are plenty of hiking trails in McGregor to tackle. The Kleinberg Walking Trail is near the town so you won’t have to go far to enjoy the countryside. The Krans Nature Reserve along with the Vrolijkheid Research station also has more to offer for Mountain Bikehikers. If you are looking for a day hiking trail route why not hike the 14KM  Rooikat and Boesmanskloof Trail.

There is also a 2 day mountain hike in the Dassieshoek Nature Reserve. The Galg Road, the original mountain pass to Greyton can also be hiked. The Heron Trail in the Vrolijkheid Nature Reserve is an easy, 3KM hike well suited to people with young kids in tow.

There are a few mountain bike routes in McGregor, they can Fish Eaglebe found along the Old Robertson Road, Rhebokskraal Road, Strykhoogte Pass, McGregor Hills and in the Vrolykhied Nature Reserve.

Birding and bird watching in McGregor gives you the opportunity to spot some interesting species. Barn owl, fish eagle and hamerkop to name but a few can all be spotted in the Vrolykhied and Boesmanskloof  Nature Reserve.

TarotOn a hot day, you can head the to McGregor Dam and take a dip. When the wind comes up windsurfers hit the dam’s waters too!

For a walk on the alternative side why not have your Tarot Cards read with Jill Hogan and gain some insight into your love, work, and family life. The Stillness Centre is a yoga and meditation healing centre. Meditate or practice in the cosy cottage, surrounded by the mountains. There are detox Olivesprogrammes, courses, workshops, massages and healing Tibetan singing bowls.

The kids will love a ride in the taxi made solely of wood. Jump aboard the “houd” taxi and head to the McGregor Saturday morning market. Bring along your basket it and fill it with organic produce, quiches, pies and baked bread. The Villagers Farm Stall is worth a visit, find locally made olive oils and products. They also host olive and juice tastings!

DonkeySwing by the Eseltjiesrus Donkey Sanctuary, where you can pet and feed them. The sanctuary provides abused, elderly and neglected donkeys the freedom to roam and live out their lives happily.

Mill Stone Pottery creates beautiful, handcrafted pottery that changes regularly. They pride themselves in creating works of art with various mediums, expect to see a multitude of works on display in their studio.

PotteryMcGregor prides itself on the artists that call the town their home. Visit the Enda Fourie Gallery, Mulberry Studio Art Gallery,  Lion’s House Gallery Studio, Roy Reycraft, McGregor Artists Studio and African Queen. The McGregor Art Route also allows you to experience 10 studios, contemporary artists, potters, and crafters. Visitors can receive a map highlighting the route at the tourism office found in Voortrekker Street. Bicycles can be hired at the tourism office as well, this is another perfect way in which to explore McGregor.
