Things To Do In Bredasdorp

Bredasdorp is surrounded by wheat fields and green countryside spotted with sheep.

This little town in the Overberg is also home to the De Hoop Reserve. Visitors can go hiking, fishing, birdwatching and go on game drives in Bredasdorp.

De Hoop Nature ReserveThe De Hoop Reserve has over 60 000 hectares of fynbos vegetation and is home to the largest population of mountain zebra and bontebok. The reserve is ideal for birdwatching and game viewing in the Overberg. There is accommodation in the De Hoop Nature Reserve, but book in advance as it gets busy during the festive season. Pack your fishing rod and hiking boots too!

Blue CranesVisit the Bredasdorp Shipwreck Museum on Independent Road. The museum has a shipwreck theme as there have been over 130 shipwrecks along the Agulhas coastline since 1673. You will find an array of trinkets collected from the various wrecks. There are cannons, figureheads, fine China and lots more. The operating hours are Monday to Friday from 09:00 till 16:45, Saturday from 09:00 till 14:45 and Sunday from 10:30 till 12:30.

Kapula CandlesWhile in town stop at Kapula Candles on the corner of Patterson Road and First Avenue. This large company specialises in handcrafted, hand painted candles. It originally started as a hobby at the house of owner Illse Appelgryn but the demand grew and now she employs many local people. Illse called her company Kapula Candles, it is her expression for “I’m making a couple o’ candles!”

CeramicsStop in at Julian Keyser Ceramics. Here you will find anything from a handmade teacup to dinner plates. Julian’s also has a wonderful restaurant, great for a cup of tea or a fantastic lunch. Julian’s can be found at 20 All Saints Road.

There is a wonderful Bredasrsdorp Historical Walk which you are encouraged to do. The walk passes along some of the older buildings in town and past the ornate Dutch Reformed Bredarsdorp Dutch Reformed ChurchChurch. The PE Le Roux Memorial Garden also features on the walk and makes for a nice spot to relax and take in the town’s atmosphere.

Adrian’s Bistro in Bredarsdorp serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner throughout the day. Before settling down for the evening buy yourself a spicy Shiraz or full-bodied Merlot at the EnviroWines Wine Shop. The wine shop pays special attention Wine Tastingto wineries that use sustainable practices that minimize the negative effect on the environment. Look out for their evening tastings throughout the year. Compliment your tasting with either a cheese platter or a three-course meal.

The Bredarsdorp Airport hosts amazing air shows in the year, make sure you keep an eye and ear out for the announcements.
