The In’s and Out’s of Parking in Hermanus
Parking For Dummies
Parking in Hermanus during the week is relatively stress-free with ample parking for all. On weekends and during the festive season things get a bit hair-raising. There is a lot of hooting and shouting, and a lot of patience is required to negotiate the jam-packed roads.
All that set aside, and you are faced with another task: paying for your parking.
In 2010 a new parking system was implemented by the Overstrand municipality. What it means for you and me is that if we park anywhere in Hermanus CBD, we will have to pay an hourly rate to stand there and avoid being fined.
The parking structure works as follows: It will cost R4.00 for an hour, R2.00 for 30 minutes and R1.00 for 15 minutes between the hours of 08:30 and 17:00 Monday to Thursday, 08:30 to 15:00 on Fridays, and 08:30 to 13:00 on Saturdays. On Sundays and religious holidays parking will be free of charge.
Parking is paid for up-front to one of the marshals assigned to that parking area.
The marshalls are dressed in black, wear orange safety bibs and all have electronic machines that print a slip depicting the time spent and paid for. If you stayed longer than what you had paid for you can settle the outstanding amount with the marshal when you return to your vehicle.
In the evenings and on Sundays/public holidays when there is no marshal and fees do not apply; local chancers dress in yellow, fluorescent safety vests and guard your car while you enjoy a drinks or dinner at one of the restaurants or bars. You DO NOT HAVE TO pay them the hourly rates but CAN tip them for the time spent watching your car; this is optional but gratefully accepted by those less fortunate, trying to earn their keep.
Parking areas that work on their own ticketing and fee structures is at Pick ‘n Pay, Woolworths, and Checkers shopping centres.
